Two years ago, Professor Soo Downe and I made a decision to try to document some of the issues currently facing maternity services globally, including the fear that prevails within those that provide care, and transmits to those who receive it. We also wanted to develop a resource of examples of inspiration where individuals or organisations had made a difference in the maternity care they provided, or from women and partners about the care they'd received. We also hoped to offer some kind of support, at an affordable price, to share positive approaches to encourage and nurture change. We wrote down our thoughts, and an idea for our book was born.
'This latest book by Sheena Byrom and Soo Downe is one of the best books I have read on maternity care in the past 10 years. It will inspire and encourage in equal measure. A 'must read' for maternity works and childbearing women'. -Denis Walsh
Reviews
'This book is an engaging, inspiring and practical call to action for those working in and around maternity. Delivered with poetry and pace and benefitting from diverse perspectives and expert opinion ROAR makes you want to do just that: roar in agreement, roar at injustice and roar solutions as loudly as possible.
Mothers, midwives, lawyers, doctors, campaigners, fathers, researchers and more each give different yet complimentary stories, analysis and strategies to expose, explore and tackle the issues that matter to women at this vulnerable and life-changing time and together they strive for a more compassionate maternity service for all birthing women.
As well as being an energetic and addictive read, the book is easy to dip in and out of and I can see myself using it repeatedly as a resource. The authors have found key kernels of truth and used them to bring practical tools to those with the power to transform women's experiences for the better'. Rebecca Schiller
